Chinese American Association Events

The Chinese American Association of North Hempstead (CAANH) recently held two events at the Manhasset Public Library.
On February 9, the CAANH gathered at the library to distribute fortune bags to patrons in celebration of Lunar New Year. “We had fun decorating Manhasset Public Library, and handing out red envelopes and goodie bags. Thanks to MPL for another wonderful collaboration, and we appreciate Assemblywoman Gina L. Sillitti and Councilwoman Christine Liu joining us on the festivities,” the CAANH posted to their Facebook.
Mei Li, author of The Dragon’s First Twig, read aloud from her book on February 11. Children who attended were also able to make a craft to take home. Li is a Brooklyn-based author who also works as a Special Education teacher in New York City schools. The Dragon’s First Twig teaches young students about the challenges of “invisible wounds,” and the importance of naming them so we can heal. A beautiful and subtle lesson about racial equality, the importance of speaking up–and listening–to those who may not have a voice or the words to frame their concerns or pain.
