A Work Of HeART

Over 160 artists with intellectual and developmental disabilities have the opportunity to showcase their work in a gallery show at the Hicksville Public Library during the months of June and July. These artists are part of the Art Studio Program at Adults and Children with Learning and Developmental Disabilities, Inc. (ACLD), a leading non-profit on Long Island with a mission to provide opportunities for children and adults with autism, learning, and developmental disabilities to pursue enviable lives, promote independence and foster supportive relationships within the community.

Students learned how to create a still-life.

Founded in 1957, ACLD is a 501(c)(3), not-for-profit agency whose mission is to provide opportunities to children and adults with autism, learning, and developmental disabilities to pursue enviable lives, promote independence and foster supportive relationships within the community. ACLD employs more than 1,300 people and operates more than 100 program sites including community residences and apartment programs across Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Services include early childhood services, day habilitation, residential alternatives, vocational training and job placement, respite, family support services, and occupational, speech, and physical therapies.

“One of our goals with our Art Studio Program is to broaden horizons for our artists to experience different mediums, techniques and experience different cultures through art,” said Diane Salomé Diaz, Program Community Coordinator for the Art Studio. “With this art show, we also aim to show the creativity and capabilities of our artists with learning and developmental disabilities and how important inclusion is in our community.”

The gallery show features a multitude of art mediums including paintings, pastels, collage work, photography, clay work, resin art, and more. The gallery show is located on the bottom floor of the Library and in showcases throughout the main floor. The gallery show is open to the public Monday-Thursday from 9:00 AM-9:00 PM, and Friday and Saturday from 9:00 AM-5:00 PM until the end of July.
