Remembering Connie Scotchie

BY Joe Scotchie

Consetta Scotchie (nee Bruno) died on June 25, 2024. Mrs. Scotchie was 92. The deceased is the mother of Joe Scotchie, longtime editor of The Roslyn News.

The deceased was born on Nov. 11, 1931, in Youngstown, the first of the daughters born to Julius and Vera Bruno. Mrs. Scotchie attended Austintown Fitch High School, where she met
her future husband, Andrew A. Scotchie, also of Austintown.

The couple married in 1953. As a Naval officer and engineer, Scotchie and his growing family lived in a variety of places, including Portsmouth and Roanoke, VA, Mayfield Heights, OH, and Glendora, CA before settling in Asheville in 1962. The couple had six children, all of whom graduated from the Asheville City Schools system.

For seven decades, Mrs. Scotchie was a familiar and vivacious presence in Asheville, beloved by all who knew her. Since 1980, Mrs. Scotchie was president of a Mountain Valley Water distributorship. The deceased was also a longtime member of St. Eugene’s Catholic Church.

Mrs. Scotchie enjoyed the company of numerous cats and dogs as pets. Every evening, she cooked for them, as she cooked for her children. Mrs. Scotchie was the premier dog-walker
in the Grace neighborhood of North Asheville, where she struck up many friendships with fellow canine lovers.

Mrs. Scotchie was predeceased by her husband, her son, Thomas, and a sister, Diane Gitlin. She is survived by five children: Virginia of Columbia, SC, Joseph of Bayside, NY, Marybeth of Anchorage, AK, Carolyn of Greensboro, NC, Angela of Asheville, plus 15 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and numerous extended family members.

Several of Mrs. Scotchie’s children served in the teaching profession in the Carolinas, Alaska, and New York. Three of her children—Virginia, Joseph, and Marybeth—are published authors, with 16 books between them. For Mrs. Scotchie, this is an accomplishment without precedent in the annals of parenting, American or otherwise.

A memorial service will be held later in the fall.
