Upcoming Autism awareness event at Bethpage Park

Residents are invited to attend the Town of Oyster Bay’s 16th Annual Autism Awareness Event, which will be held this year at Bethpage Community Park on Saturday, Sept. 28.

The event benefits Advantage Care Health Center’s Fay J. Lindner Center for Autism & Developmental Disabilities. The center offers a range of programs and clinical services to individuals, families and schools.

“Autism can present itself in a wide variety of ways, typically characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech, and nonverbal communication, as well as unique strengths and differences,” Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino said. “It is estimated that the condition affects 1 in every 36 children in the United States, and early diagnosis leads to an increased ability to help through intervention services.”

This year’s Autism Awareness event features a walk, skating, fun activities, crafts, face painting, DJ/dancing, refreshments, and anti-bullying information.

Registration begins at 10 a.m. and the walk will start at 11 a.m.

“We are pleased to once again host this event to benefit the Fay J. Linder Center for Autism and Developmental Disabilities, which offers the highest quality, state-of-the-art clinical services to people with Autism Spectrum disorders,” Oyster Bay Town Council Member Lou Imbroto said. “From hosting social skill development groups to assisting with medicine management and educating community organizations, Advantage Care Health Center does truly outstanding work in our Town.”

The registration fee is $10 for individuals and $25 for families. All registrants will receive entrance to the post-walk tailgate party with refreshments and free T-shirts while supplies last.
